Summer is here, and the temperature is rising. I know in Houston, we’re beginning to see days that are over 100ºF.

While the warm weather may feel nice for some, it can also pose challenges for people with diabetes.

High temperatures can cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels, making it challenging to manage diabetes.

It is essential for people with diabetes to be aware of how the outdoor heat affects their bodies and take necessary steps to maintain our blood sugar levels.

Managing diabetes during warm weather

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration is common during hot weather, and it can trigger high glucose levels. Therefore, it is essential to stay well-hydrated during the summer months.

If you are not a fan of plain water, you may add some flavor to it with lemons, lime, or mint. Sports drinks, unsweetened iced tea, or sparkling water are also good options for staying hydrated.

Avoid Sunburn

Sunburn can cause inflammation, which affects glucose metabolism and causes blood sugar levels to rise.

Therefore, it is crucial to protect your skin from the sun when you are outdoors.

Use sunblock with an SPF of at least 30 and wear a hat and protective clothing to avoid excessive sun exposure.

Be sure to also pay attention to how often to reapply sunscreen per the packaging of your bottle.

Be Careful with Physical Activity

Physical activity is an essential aspect of diabetes management.

However, during hot weather, it can be risky.

It is essential to exercise in a cool place or during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening.

You can also try low-intensity activities such as stretching, walking, or yoga.

Plan Your Meals

Eating well-balanced meals is critical for managing diabetes.

During hot weather, it is essential to consume foods that keep you cool and hydrated like berries and melon.

Try to eat more fruits, vegetables, and salads.

Lean protein sources such as chicken, fish, or beans are also good options.

Avoid heavy and high-fat meals that can cause digestive issues and affect glucose levels.

Keep Your Medications Safe

Insulin and other diabetes medications can degrade when exposed to high temperatures.

It is essential to store your medications in a cool place.

Take extra precautions when traveling, such as using a cooler to transport your medications.

To sum it up

Managing blood sugar levels can be challenging for people with diabetes, especially during hot weather.

However, with the right precautions and careful planning, it is possible to maintain good glucose control.

The tips mentioned in this blog, such as staying hydrated, avoiding sunburn, being careful with physical activity, planning your meals, and keeping your medications safe, can be helpful tools in managing diabetes during hot weather.

Remember to check your blood sugar levels frequently and consult your healthcare provider if you experience any changes in your glucose levels. By taking an active role in your diabetes management, you can enjoy the summer months with peace of mind.
